This book chronicles the Dorr Rebellion, the unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Rhode Island government and replace it with a more democratic one from 1841-1842, and the culmination of nearly 70 years of agitation for expanded suffrage in the state. The author conducted extensive research to gather original source material to construct a comprehensive, balanced account of this event. The study examines the development of the state's unique unwritten constitutional history alongside its written charter, and deconstructs the political and constitutional struggle that led up to the rival conventions of 1841. The work includes illustrations of the era and concludes with the lasting significance of the author's insights on this main subject. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
