This book presents an argument for the necessity of formal logic, or logical reasoning exclusively concerned with the relationships between ideas rather than with their content. The author first argues that there must be a standard of rationality, despite the claims of the empirical school to the contrary. The book then examines the judgment, the basic unit of thought, and finds that it is essentially rational, as it must always have a mediating ground between subject and predicate. This leads to a discussion of fallacies, which the author argues are always due to a lack of a middle term, even in immediate consequence and conviction.
