As the author was a university professor, responsible for teaching formal logic, they sought to determine and explore its usefulness to refute the claim that it is no longer of service to modern philosophy. Within the book, the author presents the philosophies, theories, criticisms, and benefits of formal logic against the backdrop of the varied philosophical and logical thought of history. By exploring how formal logic has adapted and persisted throughout philosophical history, the author argues that while we cannot turn away from the concrete and look solely at abstract concepts, neither can we turn away from abstraction completely. Formal logic remains a vital tool, essential to teaching sound reasoning, useful in the exploration of philosophy, sharpening thought, and aiding in the expression of thought, even if it is not a complete system and does have limitations.
