The author explores a theory of the electromagnetic field consistent with modern interpretations of chemical, optical, and magnetic phenomena in terms of electrically charged particles. A particular case of such a theory was proven to explain the phenomenon of aberration in 1892 by H.A. Lorentz. This book extends Lorentz's work to a theory of the drifting medium where the ether is stationary and material media drift through it. The author finds that a medium which is isotropic when stationary behaves when drifting like a uniaxial crystal. The book includes investigations into the values of stresses in an electromagnetic field in accordance with several possible hypotheses, extending the work of Maxwell, Helmholtz, Kirchhoff, and Lorberg by considering neglected factors which appear to the author to be of some importance. The author concludes that their theory yields a system of stresses consistent with a fluid medium in equilibrium.
