Facsimile edition covering the entire print run of Avalanche magazine (1970-1976) in cardboard box, 9 softcover volumes that cover the full existence of this influential art magazine. 8 issues in staple-bound wraps, with the final five issues perfect-bound together in a single volume. Pagination… varies. Limited print run of 1000 copies. All volumes within are excellent - no wear to speak of except occasional light rubbing at the corners and edges of the volumes. Box itself is split on two sides, but still holds together perfectly well, can be fixed by this seller upon request, but offered here at a slightly lesser price with this in mind.

The first 8 issues are reproduced individually as staple-bound square 8vos, while the final five issues (originally published as newspapers…) have been perfect-bound together in a single tall 8vo. Pagination varies. Illustrated throughout with b/w photographs. Part of a limited print run of 1000 copies. Volumes are generally clean, bright, and square with some light wear to the corners. The box is lightly rubbed/scuffed, with more noticeable marks on the bottom.

At the time, Sharp was a New York-based independent curator and Béar an underground magazine editor who had recently moved to New York from London. They published the first issue in 1970 and collaborated on 13 issues from 1970 to 1976. Avalanche focused on art from the perspective of artists rather than critics, and investigated new forms of art that were developing in the U.S. and Europe with probing interviews, extensive use of photography and dynamic layouts. For many artists, publication in Avalanche preceded a one-person gallery or museum show. Aside from an eight-page news section, the editorial content included only interviews, artists' texts and documents of art and art making. All interviews were conducted by Sharp, Béar or done jointly. Among the featured artists were Vito Acconci, Joseph Beuys, Hanne Darboven, Walter De Maria, Jan Dibbets, Philip Glass, Barry Le Va, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Gordon Matta-Clark, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Yvonne Rainer, Keith Sonnier, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, William Wegman, Lawrence Weiner and Jackie Winsor.
