Includes the essay "Art Meets Life: The New Work of David Bates" by Jacquelyn Days Serwer (Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum), which surveys Bates' recent paintings, drawings, and works on paper with particular attention to his response to Hurricane Katrina, his Grassy Lake landscapes, and his portraits, wildlife studies, and still lifes. Major works reproduced include The Storm I (2005), Katrina Portrait I (2006), Great Horned Owl II (2005), Broken Top (2006), The Deadening II (2005), Purple Irises (2006), Magnolias (2006), Barred Owl (2005), and Bait House II (2005).
