Includes curriculum vitae. Sculptor Herbert Ferber was born in New York City in 1906 with the name of Herbert Ferber Silvers. Although best known for the open-form, welded sculpture that linked him to contemporaries such as David Smith and Theodore Roszak, Ferber also painted throughout his career. For many years Ferber supported himself through the practice of dentistry, which he taught as well. Turning from early massive figures in wood and stone, he developed large, spatially inventive abstractions in brazed metal called environmental sculpture.
