Author's Note: For readers residing outside New York's Ulster and Greene Counties, some place names and local expressions may be unfamiliar. What area maps show as the Shawangunk Mountains are pronounced SHONG-gum Mountains, and one of the trails is actually spelled Shongum Path. The two-syllable spelling and pronunciation, in addition to being authentic, are also more useful poetically, so I have employed them throughout this volume. The white quartzite crown rock of the Shongum Mountains, technically Shawangunk conglomerate, is called Shongum grit or grits locally; several poems use or allude to these terms. The Peters Kill (in "Old Hat") is a well-loved stream whose name has recently been found to refer to a Dutchman whose given name was Peter; thus the stream should actually be called Peter's Kill. I am skeptical, however, that long-held usage will ever be swayed by historical correctness, so I have followed local usage. The Vly (Dutch for bog or swamp) referred to in "The One-Armed Woodchopper" is an area in Ulster County about four miles northwest of Stone Ridge. The West Kill referred to in "Trillium Trail" is not the stream but one of the taller Catskill Mountains. And in "Invocation" the phrase "Slide's snow" refers to Slide Mountain, the tallest Catskill peak.
