Interior is clean, no marks, and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 5th NY, also known as the Duryee Zouaves, is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. This zouave unit was organized through the efforts of Abram Duryée, a wealthy New York merchant. The regiment wore elaborate braided blue jackets and baggy red trousers and boasted a high number of college educated and professional men among its recruits. On August 30, 1862, during the Second Battle of Bull Run, the 5th New York was virtually wiped out in a few minutes of combat as it found itself in the path of Longstreet's massive Confederate counterattack. Together with the 10th New York, as they supported Hazlett's Battery D, 5th U.S. Artillery, the 5th New York was struck by several thousand Confederates of Hood's Texas Brigade. In an attempt to hold their position against overwhelming numbers, the 5th New York lost 124 men killed/mortally wounded and 223 wounded out of 594. The number of men killed or mortally wounded is considered the greatest loss of life in any Union infantry regiment in any single action of the Civil War. A rare regimental history; seldom offered for sale. REFERENCES: DORN NY 175; COULTER 113: Davenport's writing is unusual in that it gives details of travel and military operations on the eastern shore of Virginia, an area infrequently visited by Federal troops. Apart from this feature the narrative describes army movements in the customary field of action in Virginia; along the Peninsula in the first invasion of 1861, as well as the invasion of McClellan, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsvillethe author gives considerable attention to the country and the people, including slaves, poor whites, and Virginia gentlemen." ; NEVINS I pg 79: "A thoroughly useful narrative, based on diaries and letters, covers admirably the exploits of a regiment that saw valiant service through Chancellorsville".
