The Revolution of 1848 in France marked a shift, inspiring artists like Gustave Courbet and Jean François Millet to portray the lives of field laborers. However, it was Breton who emerged as the most celebrated painter of country life, illustrating peasant women with pride and dignity.Born in the village of Courrières in the fertile Artois region, Breton possessed an intimate understanding of agricultural life. His close relationship with the countryside informed a harmonious vision that celebrated labour, bounteous harvests, and provincial religious traditions. He became a significant figure in late nineteenth-century French painting, successfully blending academic ideals, realistic observation, and poetic sentiment, which garnered him acclaim from critics and collectors across France, England, and America.This publication accompanies an exhibition that is the most extensive ever dedicated to Breton, organised by Hollister Sturges, Curator of European Art at the Joslyn Art Museum. It features Breton's Salon paintings spanning five decades along with numerous oil sketches and drawings preserved by his descendants.
