Añadir al carritoOrig.-Karton. Condición: Sehr gut. 119 Seiten, zahlr. Abb. Nahezu tadelloses Exemplar. / Almost perfect copy. - One of 5500 copies. / Christian Boltanski: Lessons of Darkness" was the first in-depth exploration of Christian Boltanski's art in an American. The New Museum was transformed during its duration, and much of its exhibition space completely darkened, with the sole illumination provided by works in Boltanski's series Lessons of Darkness, which reflected on the artist's Jewish heritage and the horrors of the Holocaust. The impetus for the exhibition was a trip to France that exhibit curators Lynn Gumpert and Mary Jane Jacobs undertook to view contemporary art in November 1985. While there, they met Christian Boltanski for the first time. Wrote Gumpert and Jacobs of their meeting, "Although we were familiar with some early pieces that had been exhibited in New York at Sonnabend Gallery, neither of us was aware of the changes his art had recently undergone It quickly became apparent that one of France's most important artists, so influential to the younger generations we were visiting, had not received the exposure on this side of the Atlantic that his work merited." Boltanski had garnered a solid following in Europe, but there had never been an extensive showing of his work at an American museum, This exhibition, then, served two purposes: it functioned as an introduction to his work from the early seventies to the late eighties, and it provided a more focused look at a few specific themes which were of consistent concern throughout his career." Wrote Mary Jane Jacobs in the exhibit's catalogue, "Christian Boltanski's work is about life; he loads his work with images of peopleHis highest goal is for his art to be mistaken for life itself. To Boltanksi, uniting art and life is essential in order to make effective and meaningful work. 'For me,' he has remarked, 'painting isn't provocative or moving, only life is moving. But I am an artist and therefore all I do is termed art. I can only postpone the viewer's awareness of my work as art. One day, of course, it's forcibly discovered. The fascinating moment for me is when the spectator hasn't registered the art connection, and the longer I can delay this association the better.' Working with this goal in mind, he has defined since 1968 his own unique position on what it means to be and avant-garde artist: art for Boltanski, is avant-garde when you cannot name whether it is art or life." Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 120 pages. Published in 1988. Landmark Exhibition Monograph. One of the earliest and best introductions to the art and achievement of Christian Boltanski. The First Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as an oversized softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. As expected, the book is thoughtfully and brilliantly produced by Christian Boltanski: Oversize-volume format. Beige softcovers with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Art by Christian Boltanski. A retrospective, it is appropriate that it ranges over the whole career of the artist up until then. Divided into four parts that are each preceded by definitive essays from some of Christian Boltanski's most important Contributors. At the same time, Boltanski presents, in a 35-page sequence, his "Detective" photographs, which appear in book form for the first and only time, and in their entirety. The work first appeared in weekly installments in the French "Detective" Magazine. Boltanski meticulously re-presents the photographs in magazine-newsprint stock paper, distinctly setting them apart from the rest of the volume, which is printed in contrasting pristine-white, archival stock paper. The production quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the major retrospective exhibition which commenced at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 1988 and then travelled on to several major venues in the United States and Europe. Presents Christian Boltanski's "Lessons of Darkness". Recapitulates the artist's sublime oeuvre, with gravity and grace. "The task is to create a formal work that is, at the same time, recognized by the spectator as a sentimentally charged object. The artist is someone who holds a mirror and those who look in the mirror recognize themselves but each one sees a different image" (Christian Boltanski). An absolute "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the artist: "Pour K. , Amicalement, Christian Boltanski". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, was a friend and colleague of the artist and cannot be named here. This title is an art book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing (American) available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious serious flaws ("Very Good") yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0914357158. Signed by Author.
