Cloth, gilt cover device, 8vo, 25 cm, xii, 156 pp, ills. From the blurb: "W.Heath Robinson has given his name to the English language. In his own day he was dubbed the Gadget King yet the imaginative comic drawings and cartoons for which he is famous need to be seen in the perspective of his work as a whole. Geoffrey Beare sets out to restore the balance in this the first book devoted entirely to Heath Robinson's work as an illustrator and the first to assess the value of his magazine illustrations. Some of the artist's best work was for Strand Magazine, Nash's Pall Mall Magazine and Good Housekeeping, and his contribution and standing as an illustrative artist cannot properly be assessed without taking these drawings into account. A commentary on Heath Robinson's life and work plots his development as an illustrator, suggesting influences - and tracing recurring themes through the years. It also includes discussion of bibliographical points and background information of interest to collectors, drawing on previously unpublished correspondence between Heath Robinson and his publishers. The bibliography which follows the commentary has been compiled from primary sources and is the first complete and detailed listing of the artist's work in both books and magazines. The illustrations have been chosen to show the wide range of styles and effects of which Heath Robinson was capable. Where possible they have been reproduced from original watercolours or drawings, and many appear for the first time since their original publication in books or periodicals."
