From the Foreword: This book gives details of the bus fleet owned by London Buses Ltd correct to 1st January 1987, when 5506 vehicles were in stock (including those operated on behalf of London Regional Transport by LBL, Orpington Buses and Stanwell Buses). Also included are details of the LRT Bus Engineering Ltd fleet totalling 29 vehicles, and of the fleet of ancillary vehicles operated by Central Distribution Services for London Buse_s, London Underground and the other LRT subsidiaries. The modern form of London Buses Ltd can be traced back to the formation^of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. The Country Area (including Green Line) was transferred to the National Bus Company on 1st January 1970 and further separated into four operational companies and an engineering unit on 7th September 1986. London Regional Transport was set up in June 1984 to remove political control of London Transport (the former Central Area) from the then Greater London Council, and in April 1985 London Buses Limited was given company status, operating as a separate business within LRT. The engineering activities were segregated from the same date, becoming LRT Bus Engineering Ltd. During August 1986 further subsidiaries were set up at Orpington and Stanwell for the more efficient operation of routes which had been tendered by LRT. This tendering process had commenced in 1985 as a requirement of the London Regional Transport Act in order to provide London Buses Ltd with the discipline of competition and as a result a number of routes formerly operated by London Buses have passed to other operators.
