International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. This is the England of our childhood; an England of coal mines, steel yards, brass bands and proud unions that Thatcher's children know nothing of. An England of florid Majors who ride to hounds, smutty seaside postcards, pubs thick with tobacco smoke, and a hundred and one other politically incorrect specialities. Published in 1974, it explores an England which is still familiar, but which seems missing a huge number of the things we now take for granted. Like out-of-town superstores, hedge fund managers and mosques. It makes interesting reading, for so much has changed, yet so much seems the same. This is, of course, Paul Jenning's own quirky and deliberately eccentric selection of things that make the English so, well, - 'English'. There are essays by a number of contributors though, and an enormous number of truly excellent illustrations, by artists like David Gentleman and Bill Tidy as well as a many less famous, but gloriously idiosyncratic, artists in every conceivable style. It is far from predictable; alongside the obvious candidates such as tram enthusiasts and allotments, there are essays on pop music, milkmen, pantomime dames, the Lyke Wake Walk, and working men's clubs. Some essays are serious, some light-hearted, and Paul Jennings also contributes some rather jolly verses. The tone is sometimes a little twee, but not as much as you'd expect, and it doesn't simply pander to the "warm beer and cricket" view of England. Ref G 1.
