As students move through the school sys-tem, especially into junior high and high school, more and more writing is required on tests and papers. Writing skills also are re-quired to varying degrees in different jobs. Further, written expres-sion is a vehicle for sharing feelings and thoughts with others. Thus, the importance of written expression cannot be overemphasized. Until recently, however, this area has received relatively little atten-tion from educators and psychologists compared with other academic areas such as reading and mathematics. Until written expression was included as a category for learning disabilities in Public Law (PL) 94-142, the assessment of written expression tended to focus primari-ly-or only-on spelling. The relative lack of attention in terms of research, test development, and curriculum development is un-fortunate. However, it is not surprising that suc.
