Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: ood. [2], xx, 490 pages, [4]. Chronology. Bibliography. Index. DJ is price clipped. This is a heavy book and if sent outside of the United States will require additional shipping charges. The was originally published in a very limited edition by Vantage Press in 1977. This is the story of the U.S. Air Force's activities throughout World War II. Gerrit Zijlstra witnessed the European air war as a teenager in his native Holland. From his parent's house (which sheltered Jewish refugees from the Gestapo), he watched the British, American, and German planes, whether flying overhead or tumbling down nearby. Following the war, he served in the Dutch military service and trained to be a pilot. After military service he joined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, where he worked for several years. He left aviation to enter the world of business, but could not get flying out of his blood. His spare time was spent studying planes, tactics, and the history of the air forces during World War II. The importance of air power was never better demonstrated than in World War II in the European Theater of Operations. The air arms of the United States military operations sent tens of thousands of men aloft over enemy territory on hundreds of thousands of sorties, dropping millions of tons of bombs on strategic points. Diary of an Air War is the story of the U.S. Air Forces's activities throughout this gigantic undertaking, reports on a day-to-day basis. Beginning with the early days of the U.S. entry into the war, this Diary describes the formation of the first American units to operate from England over the Continent, carrying through the huge build-up for the invasion, the activities of the various bomber and fighter groups leading up to and following D-Day, the tremendous bombing expeditions over the heart of the Reich, to the final few missions before the cessation of hostilities. Meticulously researched and copiously illustrated with on-the-spot photographs, the Diary presents not only the large, earth-shaking events which are included in all the history books, but also the small events, the vignettes from the experiences of those untold thousands of men who toiled, bled, and died for the success of the mammoth undertaking. For its wealth of detail ad its organizations into a daily history of the American air war effort, Diary of an Air War will be a welcome and useful addition to the library of military historians and U.S. Air Force enthusiasts. Revised Edition [stated]. Presumed First Printing thus.
