SUB-TITLE: Three Generations Of Women's Work In The Home. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Meg Luxton teaches in the sociology department at McMaster University. She is a parent and long-time activist in the women's liberation movement. EXCERPT: INTRODUCTION Housewives make up one of the largest occupational groups in Canada. In 1980 more than half of the married women in Canada were working as full-time housewives. At the same time, in spite of the fact that the percentage of married women in the wage labour force has steadily increased since 1945, married women who work for pay have not relinquished their domestic responsibilities. Instead they have taken on a double day of work, labouring as both wage workers and domestic workers. Thus the vast majority of Canadian women perform domestic labour on a regular daily basis . . .
