Michael Wittmann, was not a man not at the top of the military pyramid, but at a lower level upon which the whole military structure depended. Unlike the high ranking German officers who commanded vast armies in the field through close coordination with their field commanders, and as such were usually removed from direct combat roles, Wittmann was placed in the heat of battle. His military exploits stand out from all of the rest, as his Sturmgeschutz III and Tiger I crews succeeded in destroying 138 enemy tanks and 132 antitank guns and field artillery pieces. Michael Wittmann (22 April 1914 - 8 August 1944) was a German Waffen-SS tank commander during the Second World War. He is known for his ambush of elements of the British 7th Armoured Division, during the Battle of Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944. While in command of a Tiger I tank, Wittmann destroyed up to fourteen tanks and fifteen personnel carriers, along with two anti-tank guns, within the space of fifteen minutes. The news was picked up and disseminated by the Nazi propaganda machine and added to Wittmann's stature in Germany. For his actions during the battle, Wittmann was promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer, and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.[ Wittmann became a cult figure after the war thanks to his accomplishments as a "panzer ace" (a highly decorated tank commander) as part of the portrayal of the Waffen-SS in popular culture. Historians have mixed opinions as to his tactical performance in battle. Some praised his actions at Villers-Bocage, while others found his abilities lacking, and the praise for his tank kills overstated. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.

Hardcover. Condición: NF. Estado de la sobrecubierta: NF. 1st. This impressive and quality publication tells to story of Michael Wittmann from of his induction into the Wehrmact in 1934 to his death as a highly decorated Tiger Tank ace in the Caen-Falaise encounters in August 1944, as the Germans desperately defended against All…ied forces following the Normandy landings. Late in 1937 he transferred from the regular German Army to what became known as the Waffen SS and soon was an armoured car driver, serving in these vehicles in the Polish campaign, quickly followed by the Blitkreig campaign in France and the occupation of Greece. By the time of the invasion of Russia in mid-1941 Wittmann had been transferred to tank duties, being awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class in September of that year. In October be began training at an officer cadet school. By January 1943 he was a Tiger Tank commander, taking part in the Kursk offensive, performing there with distinction, destroying many Ruaaian tanks and other vehicles as well as repelling counter-attacks. In February 1944 Wittmann was promoted to command a Panzer company and assigned to the Western Front. At that time he and his crew had accounted for 119 enemy tanks, mainl;y on the Eastern Front. On this new assignment Wittmann and his crew continued to score against British and American armour, but on August 1, 1944 his Tiger was destroyed in an action with the Northhamptonshire Yoemanry. Wittmann and all crew members were killed. At that point tanks he commanded had destroyed 138 enemy tanks and 132 anti-tank guns or artillery weapons. While the author set out the record the exploits of the man who was almost certainly the leading tank "ace" of WWII, he also provides graphic descriptions of armoured warfare in its many forms in different campaigns. An outstanding study in content and quality. First edition from Schiffer Military History of 1994, 346 pages including seven appendices, bibliography/sources, acknowledgements and index, (Among the appendices are a chronology of Wittmann's life and military achievements and an analysis of the Tiger I.) Illustrated with 77 b/w photos in three collations, including one double page spread. Black hard covers with grey front/spine titling are NF, decorative end papers, text block also NF, no inscriptions, (Unpaginated at back is a five page selection of other Schiffer publications.) Pictorial dust jacket also NF. This large and heavy book (just over 1.3kg unpacked) would require additional postage for international delivery. Photos (ilustrador).
