Añadir al carritoHardcover. This book is an account of the visit by the author to Panama at the invitation of the dictator and of the friendship that continued through subsequent visits. This is based on the author's diaries. From Wikipedia: "Henry Graham Greene, OM, CH (2 October 1904 3 April 1991) was an English writer, playwright and literary critic. His works explore the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world. Greene was notable for his ability to combine serious literary acclaim with widespread popularity. Although Greene objected strongly to being described as a Roman Catholic novelist rather than as a novelist who happened to be Catholic, Catholic religious themes are at the root of much of his writing, especially the four major Catholic novels: Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter and The End of the Affair. Several works such as The Confidential Agent, The Third Man, The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana and The Human Factor also show an avid interest in the workings of international politics and espionage. Greene suffered from bipolar disorder, which had a profound effect on his writing and personal life. In a letter to his wife Vivien, he told her that he had "a character profoundly antagonistic to ordinary domestic life", and that "unfortunately, the disease is also one's material". William Golding described Greene as "the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man's consciousness and anxiety." Greene never received the Nobel Prize in Literature, though he finished runner-up to Ivo Andri in 1961.Throughout his life Greene travelled far from England, to what he called the world's wild and remote places. The travels led to him being recruited into MI6 by his sister, Elisabeth, who worked for the organisation; and he was posted to Sierra Leone during the Second World War. Kim Philby, who would later be revealed as a Soviet agent, was Greene's supervisor and friend at MI6. As a novelist he wove the characters he met and the places where he lived into the fabric of his novels." Also from Wikipedia: "Omar Efraín Torrijos Herrera (February 13, 1929 July 31, 1981) was the Commander of the Panamanian and National Guard and the de facto leader of Panama from 1968 to 1981. Torrijos was never officially the president of Panama, but instead held titles including "Maximum Leader of the Panamanian Revolution" and "Supreme Chief of Government." Although he was considered a leftist autocrat, he simultaneously had the support of the United States as he opposed communism. His politics were based instead on progressivism. Torrijos is best known for negotiating the 1977 Torrijos Carter Treaties that eventually gave Panama full sovereignty over the Panama Canal, at noon on December 31, 1999. His son Martín Torrijos was elected president and served from 2004 to 2009. Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Presumed first Canadian edition/first printing.

CONTENTS: Foreword; Part I, 1976; Part II, 1977; Part III, 1978; Part IV, 1979 and 1980; Epilogue; Postscript. SYNOPSIS: In the winter of 1976, Graham Greene was invited to Panama by Omar Torrijos, the charismatic general who had taken power in 1968. His book is an account of that visit and the friendship that continued through subsequent visits. Graham Greene's penetrating and moving descriptions of Panama and its people reconfirm his mastery of travel writing, and the extraordinary Torrijos--complex, courageous, deeply democratic and profoundly human--emerges as one of the most fascinating characters in all of Graham Greene's books. Graham Greene writes in his Preface: "In August 1981 my bag was packed for my fifth visit to Panama when the news came to me over the telephone of the death of General Omar Torrijos Herrera, my friend and host. The small plane in which he was flying to a house which he owned at Coclesito in the mountains of Panama had crashed, and there were no survivors. A few days later the voice of his security guard, Sergeant Chuchu, alias Jose de Jesus Martinez, ex-Professor of Marxist Philosophy at Panama University, Professor of Mathematics and a poet, told me, 'There was a bomb in the plane. I know there was a bomb in the plane, but I can't tell you why over the telephone.' "At that moment the idea came to me to write a short personal memoir, based on the diaries which I had kept over the last five years, as a tribute to a man whom during that time I had grown to love. But as soon as I had written the first sentences after the title, Getting to Know the General, I realized that it was not only the General whom I had got to know over those five years--it was also Chuchu, perhaps the only man in the National Guard whom the General trusted completely, and it was this bizarre and beautiful little country, split in two by the Canal and the American Zone, a country which had become, thanks to the General, of great practical importance in the struggle for liberation taking place in Nicaragua and El Salvador." Graham Greene was born in 1904 in Berkhamsted, England. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
