Quiltmaking, a distinc…tly feminine art, had its genesis in the craft brought to America by European settlers. Thrifty housewives salvage d scraps from worn clothing and any unused bits of material to make the warm bed covers needed in their new environment. But in addition to this practical functi on, quiltmaking became one of the major creative means for American women to exp ress their feelings for color and form. Women of great visual gifts, untrained a s artists but with a sure grasp of color, form, and line, created cloth 'paintin gs' which for visual invention and impact rival the work of contemporary painter s and which continue to startingly modern in their colorful abstract designs. Th e ninety-six full-page color plates, as well as the many carefully selected blac k-and-white photographs, demonstrate the exceptional graphic merit of our quiltm aking heritage. Jonathan Holstein, writer, lecturer, and lifelong student of Ame rican art and design, and his associate, Gail von der Hoof, are the foremost aut horities in the United States on quilts as an art form. Their joint efforts, ent husiasm, and extensive collection culminated in their organization of the first major museum exhibition of American quilts as a design tradition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1971. The collection has since been exhibit ed in major European and other American museums, and in two exhibitions touring American museums under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exh.
