Cloth, 4to, 32 cm, 356 pp, 216 ills, including 30 colour plates. From the blurb: "Illuminated manuscripts - books written and illustrated or decorated by hand - have a very particular place in the history of civilization. From early times, even before the beginning of the Hellenic culture from which our own Occidental traditions… have largely developed, such books were known in one form or another. And until the introduction of the printing press in the fifteenth century - and, along with it, methods of illustrating printed books capable of similar multiple impressions - the illuminated manuscript was the unique form in which ideas could be interpreted at once in the lettered symbols that are words and in the pictorial symbols that are miniatures, these symbols combined in coherent and unified patterns. The handwritten and illustrated book thus has a threefold role in the history of human expression: in the history of painting, the history of decoration, and the history of ideas. Professor Robb discusses all these factors in this beautiful illustrated book (there are 216 illustrations, many in full color ). He begins with early forms of manuscript illumination, then describes in turn Byzantine illumination, Occidental illumination of the early Middle Ages, Carolingian and Ottonian illumination, illumination of the tenth and eleventh centuries in non - Germanic countries, Romanesque illumination, Gothic, illumination in the fourteenth century, Franco - Flemish manuscript illumination in the later fourteenth century, illumination in the late Middle Ages, and, finally, in the fifteenth century. A short appendix describes liturgical, service, and devotional manuscripts. Of necessity, the greater number of the examples discussed are from the Middle Ages, when Christianity found in the illuminated manuscript an ideal means of recording and glorifying the message of its faith. Many of the manuscripts were held in awe by those who owned or used them, even after they had been supplanted by printed books, because of the magic powers they were believed to have. In the chronological sequence of their stylistic changes - from the illustrations of pre - Christian and secular books, through the illuminated folios of medieval volumes, to the simulations of realistic paintings that appear in books beginning in the fifteenth century, the changing content and patterns of Western man's understanding of his experience of life can be discerned. That thought underwent a reorientation in the post - Medieval world, marking the end of the illuminated manuscript as a vital and creative mode of human expression." Top edge of textblock spotted and fore-edge slightly spotted, otherwise Very Good in a chipped and slightly torn dustwrapper.
