Historian David K. Bowden examines the circumstances surrounding the British execution of Isaac Hayne in 1781 in Charleston, South Carolina within four chapters titled as: "Life on the Pon Pon," "Capture and Execution," "Implications and Aftereffects," and "Epilogue: Patriot and Martyr." The American commander in the South, General Nathanael Greene threatened retaliation; after the victory at Yorktown, the Continental Congress considered a motion to take vengeance on their most important prisoner, Lord Cornwallis; while the debate over the Hayne affair in the British House of Lords almost led to a duel between an outraged Duke of Richmond and one of the men responsible for the execution.
