Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 32 pages. Core Analysis: What is Fascism?Trotsky rejects the idea that fascism is simply a standard form of capitalist dictatorship or military rule. Instead, he defines it through specific characteristics: A Product of Capitalist Crisis: Fascism emerges when capitalism faces a severe economic crisis that standard bourgeois democracy can no longer manage. Mass Petty-Bourgeois Movement: It relies on mobilising the ruined middle class (petty bourgeoisie), small shopkeepers, peasants, and the unemployed who have lost faith in traditional parties. Destruction of Working-Class Organs: Its primary historical function is the total annihilation of all independent working-class organisations, including trade unions, socialist parties, and communist parties. Strategic Solution: How to Fight It. Trotsky's primary critique during the early 1930s was directed at the leadership of the German left, which he argued was failing to stop Adolf Hitler due to fatal strategic errors. He proposed a clear alternative: The United Front: Trotsky fiercely opposed the Stalinist Communist International's "Social Fascism" doctrine, which claimed that social democrats and fascists were "twins." Instead, Trotsky advocated for a United Front—a defensive alliance between Communist and Social Democratic workers to physically defend their organizations from fascist gangs. Physical Defense: He argued that fascism cannot be defeated through parliamentary debate or moral appeals, but must be met with organized workers' militias and physical resistance. Revolutionary Objective: While the United Front begins as a defensive measure to protect democratic rights, Trotsky argued it must ultimately transition into an offensive struggle to overthrow capitalism, which he saw as the root cause of fascism.
