SYNOPSIS: Just as OPEN MARRIAGE provided an optimistic alternative at a time when the death of traditional marriage was predicted, SHIFTING GEARS provides specific guidelines for finding fulfillment in a world of future shock. In their new book, the O'Neills address themselves to the aftermath of the swift social change of the last five years. "We have surrendered our inner selves," the O'Neills say. They believe that mere adjustment to new life styles is the antithesis of self-definition. 'NO ONE HAS TOLD US HOW TO CHANGE. And that is what this book is about: how to shift gears in a world of social change." To help us take hold of our lives and find a life-stance that will work, the O'Neills give us the guidelines for self-management and provide us with a means of designing a life strategy. They teach us the seven keys to creative self-management, how to deal with what they call the "maturity myth," how to center on our real needs, how to stop self-diminishment and move toward creative maturity, how to give up the fruitless search for guarantees from life and learn to live in crisis as the first step toward ultimate growth. SHIFTING GEARS cuts through all the false panaceas our culture has come up with as part of the merchandising of adjustment. In place of simplistic formulas, SHIFTING GEARS evolves a workable and optimistic plan for dealing with tomorrow's world today. George O'Neill and Nena O'Neill are a husband-wife anthropology team who have done field work in Mexico, Peru, the Caribbean, and the United States. Articles on their projects have been published in anthropology journals, The Family Coordinator, the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, and other scientific publications. Since 1963, the O'Neill's primary interest has been in the area of urban anthropology and contemporary social problems. In 1967, utilizing the combined perspectives of anthropology and humanistic psychology, they focused on a study of a model for contemporary marriage presented in their book, Open Marriage: A New Life Style for Couples. This present book is an outgrowth of their continuing research in contemporary life. George O'Neill received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and is a professor of anthropology at the City College of New York. Nena O'Neill received her B.A. from Barnard College and is currently earning her Ph.D. in anthropology at the City University of New York. The O'Neills have been married twenty-eight years and have two grown sons. They are now creating an institute for research and development in the area of human relations, marriage, and the family in contemporary society, called the Institute for Open Living. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
