Sir Lionel Phillips (1855-1936) typified the self-made men who were at the forefront of South Africa's boom following the discovery of diamond and gold deposits in the late 1800s. He was a close associate of Wernher and Beit. At the heart of affairs at the time of the Jameson Raid, Phillips was sentenced to death by Kruger's government, but the sentence was softened. "Having published Some reminiscences (London, 1924), Phillips formally retired in 1925. .
