It offers 155 ballads representative of Pepys's categories, as well as essays which explain features of each category and CDs of recordings of the first two stanzas of each selected ballad. Fumerton introduces brief background essays about seventeenth-century ballad culture, its rise in the period, and current controversies. She aims to revive early English broadside ballads for students and scholars as texts, art, songs, and social records of the period. Twenty-two chapters are divided into four parts: the culture of broadside ballads; the formal features of broadside ballads; collecting: from scrapbooks to cyberspace; and selecting and selections. There is also a list of Ballad Selections: Devotion and morality; history; tragedy; state and times; love pleasant; love unfortunate; marriage; sea; drinking and good fellowship; humor and frolics; and various supplements.
