Albright's journey began in childhood, marked by an early exposure to avant-garde art during the 1913 Armory Show. This initial experience greatly influenced his artistic development, leading him to enrol at the School of the Art Institute after serving as an army medical draftsman in World War I. He graduated with distinction in 1923, and just eight years later, the museum honoured him with an exhibition featuring several key works, including the pivotal piece Into the World There Came a Soul Called Ida.Throughout his professional life, Albright remained a significant figure in both local and national art circles, frequently revisiting the Art Institute?s collections, particularly those related to the Old Masters. His connection to the museum was marked by the acquisition of his work Ah God, Herrings, Buoys, the Glittering Sea in 1941, which paved the way for a series of generous loans and gifts from the artist, his family, and patrons. The culmination of this relationship was a major retrospective organised in 1964-65, showcasing a comprehensive collection of Albright's works alongside support from the Whitney Museum of American Art.Following his death, Albright's legacy continued through the generous contributions of his wife, Josephine Patterson Albright, who donated twenty poignant self-portraits completed shortly before his passing. This book presents a rich narrative of Albright?s artistic journey, reflecting both his personal evolution and his profound impact on the Art Institute of Chicago. (MP).
