Mander had been captured while serving with the Green Howards in the Western Desert, and flown to Italy. Mander accepted captivity for a while, putting his time to good use by learning Italian. In 1943 he escaped from a prisoner-of-war train in northern Italy and, adopting the alias Pietro Bartoli, he proceeded to walk to Rome.
