Throughout his career ~ which spanned nearly four decades and brought him renown as a leading painter of the Jugendstil and as a founding member of the Viennese Secession ~ he explored and celebrated the female form and spirit. Klimt's Vienna ~ Vienna at the turn of the century ~ was a city in the throes of radical change. The rigid Austro~Hungarian social order was giving way to sweeping political and cultural forces that would eventually reshape all of Europe. In the fine arts, these new ideas found expression through the use of exotic and decorative elements inspired by Oriental and African art. Klimt, along with other Austrian Secessionists incorporated ornamental symbols and motifs in his works, infusing them with a fresh grace and elegance. Also exerting a profound influence on the arts of the time were the writings of Sigmund Freud, which revealed the intimate desires and sexual longings of the human psyche. Women began to discover a new sensuality and freedom, and Klimt sought to explore this awakening in his canvases. Above all, he attempted to capture the spiritual essence of the woman of his day, seeing in her the ageless embodiment of an erotic and mysterious life force. His paintings, with their rich colors and patterns sometimes enhanced with gold leaf, celebrate his passionate appreciation of the female figure. Angelica Baumer, author of the introductory essay, is a freelance journalist and art critic who has written numerous works on twentieth~century artists.
