Kernochan. Louis Henkin, a leading legal academic who had been cited as establishing human rights as a legal specialty. He died in 2010 at the age of 92. He clerked for Appeals Court Judge Learned Hand until he joined the Army during World War II, serving in Europe and earning the Silver Star for his exploits. Afer demobilization he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. In 1956 he worked at Columbia University addressing legal aspects associated with arms control and verification of nuclear weapons, the subject of his first book, Arms Control and Inspection in American Law (1958). He then produced several additional works on foreign affairs, international law and diplomacy followed, including The Berlin Crisis and the United Nations (1959) and Disarmament: The Lawyer s Interests (1964).
