Pirnie (Ph. D., Modern History) is a Senior Analyst at Rand. Areas include modeling and special operations forces. Dr. Pirnie contri…buted to development of the Rand Strategy Assessment System, a global model of nuclear and conventional conflict that led to the current Rand Joint Integrated Contingencies Model. The purpose of this project was to assess requirements for peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. RAND was tasked to provide a comprehensive analytic description of events associated with peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. RAND was then tasked to produce a series of vignettes--generalized descriptions of the types of operations--based on operations contained in the Force Access database. RAND was further tasked to analyze the implications of these recurring operations, especially indications of stress on frequently tasked units of various types. RAND was then tasked to recommend changes in force structure and procedures that would improved the conduct of these types of smaller-scale contingencies without detracting from the nation's ability to wage major theater warfare, Such changes included modification to force mix and force structure across the components.
