Cover has some wear and soiling. Richard Kazis is currently a senior consultant to MDRC, a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program, and a consultant on education and workforce development reform strategies. Kazis also serves as Board Chair and Interim President of The Institute for College Access and Success. Until 2014, Richard Kazis was Senior Vice President of Jobs for the Future in Boston. At JFF, Kazis was responsible for the development and implementation of policy and advocacy strategies to address educational and economic challenges facing low-income youth and adults. He led JFF's initiatives on community college student success. Richard has co-authored one book, edited two others, and has written extensively on: improving low-income community college students' performance and outcomes; low-wage worker advancement; college and career readiness approaches for struggling students; youth employment and training; and labor market intermediaries and sector strategies in workforce development. A graduate of Harvard College and MIT. Richard Lee Grossman (August 10, 1943 - November 22, 2011) was the former co-director of the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (POCLAD). He was co-author of Taking Care of Business: Citizenship and the Charter of Incorporation. He lectured widely on issues of corporate power, law and democracy. Grossman attended Columbia University, graduating in 1965. He then served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines. In 1968, he signed the "Writers and Editors War Tax Protest" pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the Vietnam War. Ever since the establishment of environmental and workplace protections in the early 1970s, private employers have resisted further curbs on corporate conduct by threatening job destruction. The refrain has been that occupational health and safety standards wipe out existing jobs and make new ones impossible. In Fear at Work, Richard Kazis and Richard L. Grossman detail the use of this job blackmail to split trade unionists from environmentalists, making unnatural enemies of those who should be allies.
