David Gebhard addressed Drawings and Intent in American Architecture and Deborah Nevins provided commentaries on the drawings. This work was based on an exhibit opening in 1977 at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of the same title. David Stanley Gebhard (21 July 1927 3 March 1996) was a leading architectural historian. He was a long-time faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was dedicated to the preservation of architecture. Gebhard was known for documenting the multiple styles of pictographs in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands. Deborah Nevins founded the New York-based landscape design firm Deborah Nevins & Associates over 30 years ago. A historian of landscape and architecture, Nevins lectures often, and her writing has appeared in numerous books, journals, and periodicals. 200 Years of American Architectural Drawing is a 1977 book by David Gebhard and Deborah Nevins that showcases the history of American architectural drawing, featuring works from 85 architects, from Thomas Jefferson to Louis Kahn, and arguing for the drawings' importance as art, documents, and visionary creations. The book, which accompanied a major exhibition, is divided into Gebhard's introductory essay on the evolution of architectural drawing and Nevins' chronological analysis of the drawings themselves, covering various types from sketches to formal presentations. This is a survey of 200 years of American architectural drawings, including works by prominent figures like Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Louis Kahn. An introductory essay by Gebhard followed by a chronological section by Nevins, covering different drawing types (sketches, plans, perspectives) and their role in architectural practice. It was the first book to comprehensively publish and appraise this heritage, positioning architectural drawings as crucial to understanding architectural history, not just as precursors to buildings but as art and documents in their own right.
