[From jacket flaps] The mystery stories and other popular fiction of Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 - 1958) brought her fame and wealth, but she was much more than a writer. She was a well-known American, respected and loved, during a time when few women achieved national influence. Her early life was conventional enough. Trained as a nurse, she married a physician and by 1902 had three sons. She was living the stereotypical life of a young matron in Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh) when she began writing to supplement the family income. Rinehart was a prolific writer. In addition to her mysteries, she wrote serious fiction, plays, magazine articles, and editorials. Her regular contributions to The Saturday Evening Post helped that phenomenally popular magazine mold middle-class taste and manners. She kept her public from the pre-World War I years until the atomic age. As Rinehart gained commercial success, she was constantly faced with the conflicting roles of mother and wife and professional writer. How she resolved the complex tensions between her domestic life and the freedom she demanded in her career is a fascinating story of a woman ahead of her time. She often escaped these conflicts through periods of illness and depression; then, to regain her health, she would set out in search of adventure. In 1915 she became a war correspondent at the Front. Later she climbed unchartered areas of the Cascades. Always her zest for life prevailed. Professor Cohn sensitively presents the life of Mary Roberts Rinehart, developing a thematic analysis of the woman and her works. She has interviewed Rinehart's sons, founders of the New York publishing house, who also made available for the first time the family archives. Cohn has also used the wealth of material in the Rinehart Collection at the University of Pittsburgh. . .
