Derived from an exhibition mounted by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Amber: ~Window to the Past explores thoroughly the various aspects of this semiprecious substance, from its part in delineating evolutionary history, through study of the folklore surrounding it, to its use in decorative arts and jewelry. The 230 amazingly varied photographs and drawings, 115 in color and many never before published, illuminate the roles of amber in both nature and art. Author David A. Grimaldi first looks at the origins and properties of amber and discusses how the inclusions preserved within it provide dues to the origins and extinctions of flora and fauna, such as the fossilized "stingless" bee that led to a revised dating of the introduction of flowering plants. The study of amber also uncovers fascinating stories of how particular subjects lived and died. One amber piece, for example, records a group of ants carrying away a praying mantis, only to be entombed with their prey in the resin flow that came suddenly upon them. Photographs of amber are supplemented by archival engravings and photographs as well as drawings by the author that "map" the activity frozen in selected amber pieces, highlighted by his depiction of an ancient Dominican forest, reconstructed from the clues provided by amber found there. A brief section also Covers the thriving trade in imitation and forged amber pieces. In part two, Dr. Grimaldi traces the appearance of amber in art, beginning with Mesolithic amulets and including Etruscan funerary figures, Renaissance altarpieces and nineteenth century jewelry, the replicated panels and original decorative pieces from the famed amber room that once existed in the czar's Summer Palace near Saint Petersburg, and continuing into this century. The images gathered here attest to the elaborate workmanship that amber has inspired as well as its enduring popularity. A selected bibliography and index round out this engrossing and readable book, which will delight lovers of science, history, and art as well as anyone intrigued by stories of how we and our world have evolved. Jacket front: Dominican amber with two amblypygids (whip scorpions) and various small insects in it. Width of amber 3". Jacket back: Bottle. China, nineteenth century.
