From the blurb - Best known for her "luminist" sculptures in brilliantly colored neon tubing, the Greek-born sculptor Chryssa is one of the outstanding artists working in America today. This is the first full-scale study of her work. Soon after her arrival in America, Chryssa found her inspiration in Times Square, and often in the newspaper for which the Square is named. Her early "Newspaper" paintings and sculptures were innovative experiments using typography, newsprint collages, metal moulds, and alphabetical forms in raised relief. Chryssa related the dazzling neon signs of Times Square to the art of Byzantium: "In Times Square, the sky is like the gold of Byzantine mosaics or icons." Her greatest works - among them Gates to Times Square, Clytemnestra, the paintings commissioned by Count Metternich - are illustrated here together with their many preliminary drawings and evolutionary studies. Chryssa's genius is richly illustrated in this volume, in a variety of mediums ranging from sensitive arrangements of calligraphic elements in plaster and metal to the luminous, and equally disciplined, neon works. 201 illustrations, including 76 plates in full color. Some of the reproductions are in fold-out formats. This large book, 274 pages, is in fine condition, in a fine French-fold dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. This large and heavy book may require additional postage.
