J. S. Thompson traces the origins and history of astrology for more than five thousand years, from ancient Sumeria and Babylonia through Biblical times and on to the work of great scientists and magicians like Ptolemy, Kepler, John Dee, William Lilly, and Nostradamus. The astrology of the ancients was quite different from most of what passes today for astrology. The mystics and priests of ancient times visualized a grand system in which heavenly bodies, plants, metals, and the destinies of men were linked by signs and symbols which could be read by intuition. It was by such inner understanding that the old herbalists understood the medicinal virtues of plants, and connected them with shapes, colors, seasons, and astrological influences. It would be mistaken to assume that such botanical knowledge was acquired simply by experiment. It is clear that in those times there was another way of knowing, and that what modern experimental science validates by trial~and~error, the peoples of the past knew by intuition. Dr. C. J. S. Thompson was a celebrated historian of medicine and surgery, and curator of one of the greatest medical museums in England. At the same time, he was a lifelong student of the occult and author of many books on magic, alchemy, apparitions, and the whole range of occult subjects.
