Dust jacket presents a little edgewear and a touch of rubbing, otherwise it too is quite good. Waiting for the Messiah was first published in 1985 by McClelland and Stewart in hardcover, 264 pages. It was the first volume of his memoirs. According to Penguin "The memoir covers the years between 1912 and 1946, shedding light on Layton's public persona and giving further substance to one of the most impressive bodies of work in Canadian poetry. His self-portrait paints a picture of a colourful life, from its beginnings in Montreal's Jewish ghetto. As a high-spirited, life-loving, and sensual boy, he reacted against the anti-Semitism and poverty that surrounded him, rejecting his parents' values and orthodox beliefs." Critical reception of the memoir itself was warm. The Victoria Times Colonist called it one of the finest memoirs written in this country, and the Globe and Mail described it as uncommonly good reading.…

Hard Cover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. BOOK: Light Shelf Rub to Boards; Edges Lightly Soiled. DUST JACKET: Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; Moderate Yellowing Due to Age; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. SUB-TITLE: A Memoir. DESIGN BY: Linda Gustafson. FRONT JACKET PHOTOGRAPH: Sam Tata. JACKET DESIGN: Linda Gustafson. SYNOPSIS: Enigmatic and explosive, Irving Layton is indisputably this country's most controversial literary figure. His flamboyant style and outspokenness have won him friends and enemies. His visceral and lyrical poetry have earned him reverence and international acclaim. Now, Layton has written openly about his life and the discordant impulses that have shaped him into the provocative poet and personality that he has become. With the vitality, passion, and intimacy that characterize his verse, his memoir--covering here the years between 1912-1946--sheds welcome light on the public persona that is Irving Layton, and gives further substance to one of the most impressive bodies of work in Canadian poetry. His self-portrait teems with insight and energy and paints a picture of a colourful life, from its beginnings in Montreal's Jewish ghetto. As a high-spirited, life-loving and sensual boy, he reacted against the anti-Semitism and poverty which surrounded him, rejecting his parents' values and orthodox beliefs. He battled his way through an educational system that provided no outlet for his imagination. While still at Baron Byng High School, he became interested in socialist causes and in the coming years frequently found himself at Horn's Cafeteria with other left-wing politicos. At university, his weekly column in the school newspaper, and his political activities, earned him a singular reputation. Layton's "crazy need for experience" drove him to embrace or challenge all that he encountered, and he recounts his first-experiences with sex and death, his associations with literary friends and rivals, his relationships with women. Equally compelling is his description of Montreal in the '40s as a city crackling with literary and political energies. It was in the ferment of this milieu that Layton ripened as a poet, and became closely associated with such people as A. M. Klein, Louis Dudek, John Sutherland, and F. R. Scott. In Waiting for the Messiah, Layton unleashes his sparkling prose style. He is bold and revealing, scathing and witty. The result is a rich and enlightening memoir of a life which has "commuted daily between heaven and hell" and produced poems which were to make a lasting contribution to Canadian literature. Irving Layton is one of Canada's best known, most prolific poets, with over forty published books, may of which have appeared in translation. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his poetry and for his continuing contribution to Canadian literature, through his own writing, as editor of several literary journals, and as teacher.
