Reviled, starved and beaten, theirs was a battle of conscience. They came from all classes and backgrounds, from apprentice piano-maker Alfred Evans to composer Michael Tippett, cavalry officer turned anarchist David Spreckley and Paul Eddington. In the First World War 73 conscientious objectors died as a result of their treatment, hundreds were imprisoned, and a mere handful were given exemption. During the Second World War many more conscientious objectors were given exemption, some on condition that another sort of war service was performed. This was not acceptable to all conscientious objectors, and men like Leonard Bird were prepared to go to prison - in his case three times- rather than compromise their beliefs. 23 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.…
