EXCERPT: Preface . . . This text was written for use at the junior or senior level. The first seven chapters can be covered in a full semester, as can Chapters 8 through 11. Chapters 12-14 can themselves constitute a full third semester. Chapter 14 is written at a somewhat more sophisticated level but requires no further mathematical background. The first eight chapters are devoted to probability and the last six to statistics, since a firm background in probability is required for an understanding of statistical inference. However, in Chapter 1 we introduce and illustrate the kinds of problems that are treated in both probability and statistics. Generally the exercises are included to test understating of the concepts.
