Once again Mr Winn employs the literary device of shifting his narrative back and forth in time, so that interpolated into his descriptions of the sea and air battles in which he took part, of a visit to the Maginot Line, of his writing assignments at the outbreak of hostilities and all the drama and comedy of the Home Front there are accounts of such diverse characters as Elsa the lioness; Mrs Ian Smith talking with extreme candour in the Prime Minister's residence in Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia; the Beatles before their deification; and Vivien Leigh, with whom the author started a close friendship during the war years, which lasted until her death.
