In purchasing works by as yet unrecognized French painters they relied largely on intuition and help from their long-standing con-tacts with such Paris dealers as Durand-Ruel, Druet, Vollard, Bernheim Jeune and, later, Kahnweiler. During the second half of the nineteenth century, Russian artists and art critics took a keen interest in every new trend in French painting and literature.
