They are composed chiefly of works from the celebrated private collections of two Moscow connoisseurs, Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, who associated closely with French artists and critics. In purchasing works by as yet unrecognized French painters they relied largely on intuition and help from their long-standing con-tacts with such Paris dealers as Durand-Ruel, Druet, Vollard, Bernheim Jeune and, later, Kahnweiler. During the second half of the nineteenth century, Russian artists and art critics took a keen interest in every new trend in French painting and literature.
