Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. This book was first published by Jonathan Cape in 1997. This is the Pimlico edition. The author, Jeremy Lewis, has signed and inscribed the book on the title page. This book came from the library of George Plimpton. The inscription reads: 'For George Plimpton (who made golf a laughing matter) very best wishes, Jeremy Lewis, Lake Como, May 1998.' Included in the book is a large card with a printed address of what looks like a hotel in Lake Como, Italy. Underneath that Mr. Lewis has penned his name and address in London (Percival Road). If you're not familiar with George Plimpton, take a look at his Wikipedia profile, or better yet google 'In His League: Being George Plimpton', a really interesting article published in The Nation. Suffice it to say he lived a fascinating and distinctive life. You can see the covers in the photos. They are in very good condition. This is a very large book (653 pages), so it's a very good thing that it is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are in very nice condition as well. They are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them up number of times without seeing any instances of soiling. There were two top corners that had been folded over. I flattened them out. There are a tiny creases now. I didn't see any other creasing. There are two sections of photographs, eight pages in each. They are all in excellent condition., Old photographs of Connolly, wives, children, friends. The pages are lightly and uniformly toned. There are no markings anywhere. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The book ends with three sections, References (577-616), Bibliography (617-623), and Index (625-653). The author, Jeremy Lewis, passed away in 2017. "Jeremy Lewis was one of the last old style publishers, a veteran of Deutsch and Chatto in their heyday," commented Dan Franklin at Jonathan Cape. "He was a delightful, funny, gentle man, who loved gossip, a good lunch and a literary party. Of the four books he published at Cape, Cyril Connolly was a masterpiece, while his most recent biography, David Astor, achieved that most difficult feat: to write interestingly about a truly good man. He was widely loved and is going to be sadly missed." Lewis was remarked upon for his "extreme self-deprecation" and "old-fashioned fondness for long lunches and habit of publishing brilliant but unsellable books" by the Telegraph. Of the "man of letters", it wrote: "after a spasmodic and unfulfilling career as a publisher and agent, he flourished later in life as a reviewer, editor and biographer, and became one of the best-loved figures in the London literary world." Dan Franklin wasn't the only one who praised Cyril Connolly: A Life. The Guardian called it 'An enthralling biography.' The Daily Telegraph 'An exceptionally delightful and definitive biography. Like a good novel, this biography is full of memorable scenes in which the hero's character gradually assumes that of a difficult but cherished friend, one whose company annoys and amuses in almost equal terms.' Auberon Waugh of The Literary Review wrote 'One of the funniest literary biographies I've ever read. Excellent, wildly funny and informative.' From the rear cover: 'Precociously brilliant in his youth, Cyril Connolly was haunted for the rest of his life by a sense of failure and a romantic yearning to recover a lost Eden. His two great books, The Unquiet Grave and Enemies of Promise, are classics of English prose, combining wit, romanticism and merciless self-knowledge. As witty in person as he was in his prose, he was notoriously slothful and greedy; he was married three times, and his dealings with women were bedeviled by a lifelong tendency to be in love with two or more people at once.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
