Añadir al carritoHardcover / Hardback. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First edition. Hardback. The author's career as a political lawyer began in Johannesburg in 1957 when he exposed the brutal conditions under which farm workers lived in the Bethal district, and soon opponents of the Vorster regime were turning to him for their defence. Carlson presented nearly 100 cases of torture to the courts and defended Africans held under the suppression of Communism Act and the Terrorism Act including the 22 Africans who were acquitted after two trials; Nelson Mandela, condemned to life imprisonment, and his wife who was one of the 22. Carlson's work got him into deep trouble; several attempts were made on his life and police harassment reached such a pitch that it became obvious that he was facing arrest. Though his passport had been confiscated, he nevertheless escaped to London. The author's account of his battles is a monument to his courage and tenacity in the face of the forces of repression in South Africa. Illus. + Index. 382pp. lge. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. G++ in G+ dw. which has internal water staining. A fairly heavy book which may require additional postage.

His office was shot up. His home was bombed. His passport was confiscated. Why? - Because he dared to fight for the rights of black South Africans. Joel Carlson's career as a political lawyer began in Johannesburg in 1957 when he exposed the brutal conditions under which farm workers lived in the Bethal district and soon opponents of the Vorster regime were turning to him for their defence. Carlson presented nearly 100 cases of torture to the courts and defended Africans held under the Suppression of Communism Act and the Terrorism Act including the twenty-two Africans who were acquitted after two trials: Nelson Mandela, condemned to life imprisonment, and his wife who was one of the twenty-two. Carlson's work got him into deep trouble: several attempts were made on his life and police harrassment reached such a pitch that it became obvious that he was facing arrest. Though his passport had been confiscated, he nevertheless escaped to London. Carlson's account of his battles is a monument to his courage and tenacity in the face of the forces of repression in South Africa. Illustrated. 382 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

In this wry, affectionate look at Australia, John Greenway, distinguished anthropologist and folklorist, examines the significance of the frontier and man's urge towards it.
