Sl…ight wear to jacket and book. Wales, within easy reach of some of England's largest cities, is a country where a spirit of separatism is strong but not - usually - aggressive. South Wales* is perhaps more easy-going than the North, but even in Cardiff, where an English accent goes unnoticed, that spirit is somehow, intangibly, there. The separate identity of Wales, in spite of centuries of English political and economic influence, is well established. In a very few parts the possessor of some of the worst industrial landscape in Britain, South Wales is on the whole, and despite such blemishes, a region of beguiling charm. Its two great medieval cathedrals - Llandaff and St David's - are less imposing, but in their quieter way not necessarily less impressive, than some of their English counterparts. Its castles are generally not as fine as those of North Wales, but in Caerphilly the South has a castle of immense, complex, and, some would argue, unsurpassed splendour. It is wrong to generalize too freely about South Wales because of the many variations within the region: it can be confidently said, however, that the area's beauty and character amply repay investigation. As in other volumes in this series, the principle followed has been that places in the gazetteer are included solely for their interest, regardless of their 'importance' or familiarity. Size: 4to.
