Since its origin in China about 4000 years ago, acupuncture has spread all over the world, initially from China to Japan and Korea, and more recently to the West. This, together with centuries of experience in using acupuncture to diagnose and treat various diseases and symptoms, has resulted in many revisions, modifications, expansions and adaptations of the techniques. For example, 'medical acupuncture' as practised in the West bears very little resemblance to the method of acupuncture envisaged by its Chinese forefathers apart from using needle insertion. Compared with other forms of treatment, such as allopathic medicine or homeopathy, the differences and the lack of unifor- mity is huge indeed. Every approach has its merits and disadvanta.
