Hardback. Condición: Fair. In 1942, Lt. Herman H. Goldstine, a former mathematics professor, was stationed at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. It was there that he assisted in the creation of the ENIAC, the first electronic digital computer. The ENIAC was operational in 1945, but plans for a new computer were already underway. The principal source of ideas for the new computer was John von Neumann, who became Goldstine's chief collaborator. Together they developed EDVAC, successor to ENIAC. After World War II, at the Institute for Advanced Study, they built what was to become the prototype of the present-day computer. Herman Goldstine writes as both historian and scientist in this first examination of the development of computing machinery, from the seventeenth century through the early 1950s. His personal involvement lends a special authenticity to his narrative, as he sprinkles anecdotes and stories liberally through his text.…

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann by Herman H. Goldstine. Princeton University Press, 1972. First edition hardcover in the original illustrated dust jacket. Contemporary listings and bibliographic records identify the 1972 Princeton hardcover as the first edition. A significant history of the development of computing from the mechanical calculating devices of Pascal and earlier mathematical traditions through ENIAC, EDVAC, and the electronic stored-program computer associated with John von Neumann and the Institute for Advanced Study. Goldstine writes from an unusually close vantage point: he participated in the ENIAC project and later collaborated with John von Neumann in the development of early electronic computing. The book includes discussions of ENIAC, EDVAC, numerical mathematics, the Institute for Advanced Study computer, automata theory, and the spread of stored-program computer concepts. The rear dust-jacket photograph depicts Julian H. Bigelow, Herman H. Goldstine, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and John von Neumann in front of the Institute for Advanced Study electronic computer. Condition: Good hardcover in a Good original dust jacket. Binding appears firm. Interior is generally clean in the pages examined, but the front free endpaper bears several old handwritten price/cataloging notations, with small areas of apparent adhesive residue or staining nearby. A small dark mark is present on the lower page edge. Original dust jacket is substantially rubbed and soiled with heavy edge wear, creasing, abrasions, and chipping at the spine ends and corners. Short tears and losses are present along the upper jacket edge, and the rear panel has a small abrasion/puncture near the lower portion. Jacket remains substantially complete and retains its historically interesting rear photograph. Please see photographs for details. Collector / Significance: An important firsthand history of early electronic computing by one of the participants in the development of ENIAC and the Institute for Advanced Study computer. The book was also a 1973 National Book Award finalist in The Sciences, adding to its significance in the literature of computer history. Its coverage of ENIAC, EDVAC, John von Neumann, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and the emergence of modern computer architecture gives it particular appeal to collectors of computing history, mathematics, technology, and twentieth-century science. Carefully packed for shipment. USPS Media Mail available within the United States unless otherwise requested. International shipping available at cost.
