While his massive labors on the classification of plants are universally known, and indeed still form the basis for all plant and animal taxonomy today, his writings are less known, because of a dearth of translation. In this book, extracts from three major expeditions that he undertook through his native Sweden have been illustrated and presented in an attractive form for the general reader. His first expedition, the Lapland journey, was made when Linnaeus was just twenty-five years old. In spring, alone and on horseback he set out for the harshness and beauty of his northern land. Botany was only one of his interests, and his writing is full of observations on other inhabitants of the living world, including the Lapps, whose strange customs he details. Nine years later he went to Oland and Gotland. This time, with better organization and a group of students for company, he braved the treacherous seas to discover the profusion of rare plants that thrived on these islands in remarkable contrast to the poverty of the islanders. In this secluded plant paradise he found much of interest, including dye plants and plants of medicinal value. Linnaeus's writing is in the form of journals, and the freshness of his observations on the beauty of the flower and animal life and the landscape of Sweden have been captured in the strikingly fine, accurate illustrations to this book.
