Delta of Venus (1990) by Anais Nin (Pocket Books) ISBN: 0671742493 Condition: Used (tastefully dog eared and faintly scandalised) as sold by Crappy Old Books Here it is: the book everyone pretends to have read for the lyrical prose and psychological insight, while quietly being very aware that it is,…in fact, erotica. Delta of Venus is Anais Nin writing stories that were originally commissioned as straightforward smut, and then refusing to be straightforward about anything. Instead of basic one dimensional fantasies, you get lush, decadent little worlds where desire, power, imagination and neurosis swirl together like a very expensive perfume someone definitely over-applied. These short stories drift through bohemian salons, boarding houses, hotel rooms and morally dubious corners of Europe, populated by artists, voyeurs, drifters, rich people with troubling hobbies, and lovers who probably need therapy more than they need each other. Nin takes the erotic and turns it into something strange and moody and occasionally so ornate that you forget you are reading about sex until you suddenly remember, quite vividly, that you are. This particular copy has arrived via Crappy Old Books, a fine and noble establishment where nothing is pristine but everything has a story. You may notice: A cover that shows the light wear of a paperback that has been discreetly carried in handbags, hidden behind more respectable hardbacks, or slid under a pillow when someone?s mother unexpectedly entered the room. A spine with visible creases, suggesting that at least one previous reader did not just skim the racier stories and abandon ship, but actually read the whole thing, probably with raised eyebrows. Corners that are pleasantly softened, as though this book has spent time face down on a bedside table while someone considered their life choices. Inside, the pages still contain every lush sentence, every intense gaze, every scene where people say things like ?I long for?? instead of ?text me later? The paper might be slightly tanned, which only adds to the air of something discovered in an old trunk, possibly alongside love letters and questionable photographs. There may be the faint ghost of a folded corner or two marking a favourite story. No pages are missing; the suggestive bits have not been censored by a prudish librarian with scissors. Buying Delta of Venus in Used condition from Crappy Old Books delivers a very particular vibe. You are reading erotica marketed as literary classicism, in a copy that has quite clearly already been through at least one reader?s emotional and possibly experimental phase. It is all very on brand. High art. Low impulse control. Yellowing paper. Ideal for readers who like their erotica more atmospheric than anatomical enjoy long, elaborate sentences where you occasionally have to pause and remember what everyone was actually doing are fond of bohemian misery, moral ambiguity and the sense that no one in these stories has ever heard the phrase healthy boundaries Adopt this Used copy of Delta of Venus and give it a new, slightly disreputable spot on your shelf. The cover may be worn, but the prose inside still purrs, sighs, and smoulders exactly as intended. Just do not be surprised if you feel an inexplicable urge to drink red wine, write in a journal and make at least one questionable romantic decision.
