This volume was probably the first to undertake a comprehensive study of the development of civil aviation in NZ --- initially with hot air baloons, but by 1910 heavier than air flights were being made. (The author did not overlook the earlier attampts at powered flight by Richarsd Pearse, saying that he made "at least one powered take-off in March 1903 --- nine months before the Wright Brothers got off the ground" but no verification was available.) Before WWI a number of different machines had flown in NZ, but that conflict improved aeronautical technology to the extent that aircraft were reliable and post-war were more accepted in the public mind. The author covers the years of the first trans-Tasman and trans-Pacific flights along with visits by Australia's Kingsford Smith in his Southern Cross tri-motor aircraft doing much to advance aviation. The book then follows the growth of the Aero Club movement and the establishment of a number of small airline services. In the late 1930s the formation of Union Airways provided NZ with a fledgling internal airline service using modern aircraft. WWWII came and quickly halted its progress. In 1945 the nationalised air line NAC (New Zealand National Airways Corporation) was established as a State monopoly while international flights were operated by TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited) a three-way venture with Australia, NZ and Great Britain. In 1961 TEAL became fully NZ owned as Air New Zealand, and eventually (but outside the orbit of this book) NAC was absorbed into the Air New Zealand fold. By then civil aviation had progressed, both internal and internation, from making do with WWII vitage aircrft through to turbo-prop and jet aircraft. Rendel also pays close attention to other aspects of aviation developments including agricultural and general operations, regulations and legislation, aircraft engineering and airports. The first 11 chapters of the book are devoted to the historical aspects of civil aircraft operations up to 1973. Pages 137 to 183 contain nine appendicies covering related aspects, including a chronology of events and an extensive listing of aircraft registration letters, these are followed by a bibliography and index This book covers what can be seen as the most important era of civil aviation and today it remains an important reference to those pivotal years. First edition of 1975 from Reed, 188 pages, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, maps, tables, document reproductions. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ with hint wear spine base/lower corners, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Colour art/pictorial DJ also VG+ with light crease top front corner.
